I have sort of taken after my mom in this respect; she has made so many cakes in her life - for weddings, baby showers, bridal showers, going away parties, you name it. I've only made a few cakes so far, and am learning more as I go along.

The picture at left is a snapshot of the cake she made for my own wedding on September 15, 2001 - see the Photo Gallery for full-size version.

 Themes
My own wedding had a seaside theme, so colors consisted of a wide range of blue, various seashell elements (real shells and chocolate shells), rope netting, chocolate and gummi fish, and other beachy-items.

Chocolate shells, edible pearls, and rope fondant are en example of popular cake decorations for such a theme. Here's and example.

Consider shape and configuration.

Decide how many people will attend your reception.

 Fresh Flowers
Frosting flowers taste good, but fresh flowers really make a cake.

Not only do they look gorgeous cascading down the side of a cake or placed on several tiers, but they also set the stage around the base on a cake table.

Consider in-season flowers that will match your wedding colors.
